The Origin of Bingo

It is believed that the game originated in Italy as a lottery in 1530. From there it can be traced to French aristocracy where it was known as ‘Le Lotto’ in 1778. By the 18th century the game found a lasting home in Britain.

In the United States the game was known as 'Beano' because beans were used to mark the numbers. Evidence suggests that it acquired the name 'Bingo' when a lady friend of Edwin S Lowe was so elated at winning she shouted 'Bingo' instead of 'Beano'. Edwin S Lowe was a toy manufacturer who printed cards and packaged the game under the name of 'Bingo'. In the US Bingo is played with 75 balls and 5x5 cards printed with random numbers.

And, to answer your inquiry, yes, there are several places in Wellsburg where you can yell Bingo. To start, try the VFD Firehall or the Moose Club.

The Wellsburg VFD offers Bingo every Thursday between 6:30 pm and 10:00 pm in the VFD Banquet Hall at 12th and Yankee Streets.

Boating

Boating is popular in Wellsburg where there are two public launch ramps and numerous private and public docks along the shore of the Ohio river. The first and largest launch ramp is located at 12th Street, next to the Crooked Dock Restaurant. It features a shelter and a floating dock.

A second ramp is located at the extreme southern end of town off of Charles Street. The ramp is on Buffalo Creek as it enters the Ohio River. Canoes and Kayaks launched from this point could proceed up Buffalo Creek for about a mile. The scenery is beautiful. There are no boat docks at the site.

Hunting & Fishing

The Ohio Valley is a renowned paradise for hunters and fishers. Bear, deer, pheasant, turkey, and grouse top the list for hunters. The rivers, streams, and lakes provide an abundance and variety of fishing opportunities.

Halloween is another one of those special days. Perhaps the city's layout contributes to making a great place for children to Trick or Treat. Hundreds of ghosts, goblins, and superheroes parade through the streets. Fun for all ages. The Fire Trucks and Police Cars add to the festivities.

In preparation for the big event, many owners decorate their homes. In Wellsburg, Halloween home decoration has evolved to an art form best appreciated by Stephen King.

It is incredible how a tub full of candy can attract a few dozen, no make that hundreds of children of all ages. The costumes ranged from beautiful angels to horrific monsters. As you peruse the photos, remember the times when Trick or Treating was a highlight of your childhood. Halloween in Wellsburg lets you relive those days.

BETTY CARR RECREATION PARK

betty carrThe largest park (10.62 acres) in the city is centrally located along the Ohio river. It sports three baseball/softball fields, playground equipment, a basketball court, a large shelter, two baseball pitching/hitting cages, three Pickleball courts, a refreshment stand, and several large grassy areas.

Dr. Fred Zelt, a geologist, uses the park to give geology presentations on our local area. He chose the park because the exposed hillside across the river clearly illustrates the rock strata.

History buffs will want to allow an hour or two to browse. The Center is packed with interesting displays and exhibits.

For over 300 years, even before West Virginia was a State, the West Virginia area has had the highest per capita signups to go to war. Of West Virginia's 55 counties, Brooke has the highest per capita response. When the need was seen, our ancestors responded. No matter the branch, they stepped forward.

Yes, there is an appropriate showing of war memeorabilia.

THE HISTORIC WELLSBURG WHARF
historic wharf

The historic Wellsburg Wharf was built in 1836 by a group of businessmen. Located off Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets in Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia, the site consists of the remains of the wharf and the foundations of two warehouses. The remains are a 200-foot long section of riverbank, lined with cobblestones, and descend from Main Street into the water. The simple design accommodated freight from heavy sternwheeler traffic. Today the site is managed as a park area with recreational craft able to moor at the pier.

gazebo

Immediately to the north of the Wharf, The City of Wellsburg erected a gazebo commemorating other historical activities. Most notable is when Captain Meriwether Lewis passed by Charles Town in Virginia (later renamed Wellsburg) on September 7, 1803. Lewis brought the expedition's keelboat down the Ohio River to rendezvous with William Clark near Louisville, Kentucky.

Lewis & Clark

At the top of the riverbank near the gazebo there is a historic giant sycamore tree.
